When to use this
You can change your own mailbox password directly from webmail, without needing cPanel access and without contacting us. Do this whenever you want a fresh password, and do it immediately if you suspect the password has leaked or the account is compromised, in the compromise case, follow the full checklist in our article on compromised email accounts, of which the password change is step one.
How to change it
- Log in to webmail at yourdomain.tld/webmail with your full email address and current password, as described in our article on accessing webmail.
- Click Settings in the left-hand menu.
- Select Password from the settings sections.
- Enter your current password, then the new password twice.
- Click Save. The change takes effect immediately.
Choosing the new password
- Long beats clever. Aim for at least 12 characters, and more is better, when our own staff generate passwords they are never shorter than 18 characters, which is a sensible standard to copy.
- Unique to this mailbox. Never reuse a password from any other site or account, reuse is the single biggest cause of the compromises we deal with.
- Use a password manager to generate and store it, rather than inventing something memorable, memorable usually means guessable.
After changing it
Every device and mail program that connects to this mailbox, Outlook, Thunderbird, your phone, will fail to connect until its saved password is updated. This is expected, and the prompts usually appear within minutes. Update the password in each program's account settings, and if a device keeps prompting even after the correct new password is entered, restart the mail program before troubleshooting further. Repeated failed attempts from a device holding the old password can also trigger the server's protective IP ban, if webmail works but a specific location suddenly cannot connect at all, see our article on website access issues.
If you can't log in to change it
A forgotten password can't be changed through webmail, since webmail needs the current password to log in. Reset it instead from cPanel under Email Accounts if you have cPanel access, or open a support ticket or contact us on WhatsApp and we will reset it, our resets always issue a randomly generated password of at least 18 characters, sent via our official Business WhatsApp, as described in our article on compromised email accounts.
